The problem
Smaller merchants have a lackluster presence on the Affirm Marketplace, and improving their profile is an inefficient and manual process. As a result, they miss out on sales.
Approximately 30% of all Affirm sales are generated through the Affirm Marketplace - a shopping directory on the app. While every merchant that accepts Affirm at checkout is listed in the Marketplace, our smaller merchants need to manually work with their sales rep to add the branding material needed to appear in browsing and promotional sections.
The solution
A self-service tool on the Merchant Portal, enabling merchants to manage their own content instantly.
This resulted in an increase of marketplace transactions for small merchants. At the same time, operating costs increased due to issues with content uploaded by the merchants.

Components
Photo uploader
Affirm had never built an external-facing photo uploader before, so this was an opportunity to create one that could scale to other sizes and shapes.

Marketplace preview
With a limited design system, a small engineering team and render time considerations, I crafted this preview experience.
It was important to provide a full preview of their merchant page. To account for the render time concern, it was placed later in the carousel.

Outcome
Increased sales, increased operating costs
A promising percentage of merchants used the tool within the first quarter of release. Those that updated their Marketplace profile saw a significant increase in both overall sales and percentage of sales attributed to Marketplace traffic.
